Google Mail Problems
How many of you are aware on 24 February, for a few hours of the morning, mail, google did not work ..
here's the explanation from Google and its apology / refund ... (not evil-however much of the hat to Google and its trade policies)
Dear user of Google Apps,
Between 10 and 13 hours of English Tuesday, 24 February 2009, some users of Google Apps mail have not been able to access their account. The current period of interruption of service varies from user to user as the recovery process was implemented in several phases. No data was lost during this period of time. The main cause of the problem was a software bug that caused an unexpected change in the service during an event of routine maintenance. The main cause of this unexpected interruption of service has been identified and resolved.
Additional Details
A few months ago, was created a new software to optimize the functionality of the data center to make more efficient use of computing resources of Google, so as to increase performance and make the system faster for users.
The Google software is designed to allow maintenance work to be done for the data centers without compromising users. User traffic that could potentially be affected by an event of maintenance is directed to another branch of service. Tuesday, 24 February 2009, there was an unexpected interruption of service during an event of routine maintenance in a data center. In this particular case, the user traffic is directed to another data center during maintenance, but the new software that optimizes the position of the user data has had the unexpected side effect of giving rise to a bug in the code of Google Mail . The bug has had the effect that the computer center of the target data become overloaded when users were directed to it, and in turn caused a cascade effect when the user traffic has been diverted automatically in response to the initial problem. Google engineers have acted quickly to restore the balance of load between the different computing centers in order to restore access to users. E 'stato take some' time to complete this process.
The Apps Status Dashboard launched recently include more details on this event, including actions that are being taken to improve performance. For a complete report you can visit http://www.google.com/appsstatus/ir/1nsexcr2jnrj1d6.pdf (English only).
